Tenor Conclave

The year 1956 represented a transitional period in the musical career of John Coltrane. He had first joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955 and would form his own celebrated quartet with McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones in 1960. Red Garland and Paul Chambers, also members of Miles’ quintet, are both present on Tenor Conclave, with drummer Art Taylor completing the rhythm section. The most attractive point of the album, however, is the unusual collaboration between four famous tenor saxophonists: Trane, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, and Hank Mobley.
