Description
Hadley Caliman’s Iapetus is a sought-after West Coast jazz session, recorded in Los Angeles with a standout group including Todd Cochran, Luis Gasca and Woody “Sonship” Theus. Much of the material was written by Cochran (aka Bayeté), whose Fender Rhodes shapes the record’s fluid, cosmic feel.
A key figure in late ’60s and early ’70s San Francisco, Caliman moves between tenor sax and flute with ease, grounding the album’s modal drive and spiritual edge. Highlights range from the propulsive title track to the airy ‘Quadrivium’ and the funk-leaning ‘Watercress’.
Originally released on Mainstream Records, Iapetus has grown in reputation among collectors and deep jazz listeners. This edition is newly remastered and includes notes from Todd Cochran, reflecting on the sessions and the circle of players behind them.
