Description
Molly Payton is a singer, songwriter and musician from New Zealand, now based in London - new album eternity is built upon joyful collaboration with friends.
Many of the songs were test driven at shows before completion, playing with a band made up of friends and long term collaborators, including current producer Tom Verberne, and Oscar Lang who produced her first record and much of her early music. Payton boasts an impressive resume supporting acts like Beabadoobee, Alex G, Arlo Parks and Tom Odell. Her years of experience on the stage are reflected in the record, eternity fizzes with organic energy, revealing an artist at her most competent and most confident.
Moving to the UK at 16, Molly Payton quickly embraced the indie and alternative rock scene, establishing herself as a prolific songwriter through a string of EPs, including Mess, Porcupine, Slack and Compromise. Her music invites a cathartic emotional response, moving from heartfelt acoustic ballads to grungy rock anthems.
The story of eternity starts with a cafe's record player. Spending her days at work listening to the greats, wondering exactly how timeless songs are built, Payton set her mind to hard work. She spent more time reading and writing away from the guitar, and started reworking old material and unfinished ideas, scraps of old songs abandoned out of a callow belief that a great song comes immediately or not at all. She spent her time listening to the discographies of life-long idols; Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Elliot Smith, and also Americana influences like Wednesday, MJ Lenderman, Pinegrove, big thief and sunkilmoon. -
